The Modern Making of Refugee Politics

August 23, 2009 · Leave a Comment

This makes you feel sad to be a Dane. We have gone from being open, accessible, tolerant and supportive to being a bunch of mean spirited, bigoted, xenophobic fools being jerked around by a small group of populist politicians that make you think of Germany in the 1930’s. We have reached the point where we spend 10 years figuring out whether or not to grant someone asylum. Meanwhile we stick them in camps with absolutely nothing to do … and feel surprised when half of them develop psychological issues after years of incarceration waiting to find out if they will be sent back to whatever war-torn patch of land the escaped from originally. Worse … of the so-called Iraqi refugees now being deported to a life in terror at least many of them (at least 10) are children below the age of 10 that was born and raised in Denmark and never have been to Iraq. Seriously … what monsters we have become. Outside the church being raided by the police young demonstrators sat down on the street to try and prevent the police from arresting the Iraiq refugees. Here is what happened to them: http://politiken.tv/nyheder/indland/article767796.ece

A sad day for what was once one of the most openminded, fair and progressive democracies on the planet. But remember … you get the government you deserve.

What we need is a comprehensive set of smart policies to jump-start this transition without delay and maximize the benefits to our environment and economy. The time to act is now.

Nintendo seems to have bucked the recession. The Japanese video game manufacturer has doubled November sales of the Wii in the U.S. from a year ago, according to NPD’s latest release on gaming sales.

The demand for the Wii remains strong since the game console’s debut two years ago. The company sold a record 2 million Wiis last month, higher than the previous 23 months. Nintendo (NTDOY) has significantly increased shipments of the red-hot Wii for this holiday season after dealing with a shortage last year. Last November Nintendo sold 981,000 Wiis.

Analysts were taken by surprise by how well the $249 console has performed in a flagging economy. “Two million? You sure? This is mind-boggling,” said Michael Pachter, a top industry analyst for Wedbush Morgan Securities. Pachter had predicted sales of 1.4 million Wiis. “At least Nintendo is meeting demand.”

What would you do with a $40 Linux computer the size of a three-prong plug adapter?

Marvell Technology Group is counting on an army of computer engineers and hackers to answer that question. It has created a “plug computer.” It’s a tiny plastic box that you plug into an electric outlet. There’s no display. But there is an Ethernet jack to connect to a home network and a USB socket for attaching a hard drive, camera or other device. Inside is a 1.2 gigahertz Marvell chip, called an application processor, running a version of the Linux operating system.

All this can be yours for $99 today and probably for under $40 in two years.
